Card exploration: The Tempest

Before the white card model presentation I was really struggling to settle on a particular shape for the set. I definately had a concept and that reference images were interesting but working this into a real 3-D set that wasnt just sculptural but also functional was a struggle. One way I thought i could resolve the need to creat different spaces for the scene was having a revolve, however in a tutorial it became clear that the Temporary space was not suitable for this structure. This meant if I were to continue with the large metal shards they couldnt revolve but needed to move in a different way or then they would completely obscure the sightline in the temporary space.

I showed my director these images they are attempting to show the spines of a collapsed ship, George said he liked the simplicity of the image especially how powerful they looked in the space. But I knew there had to be a more elegant way of making it. Also without a revolve it seemed that it would be a very awkward structure in the space. i attempted after this to look at more skeletal ship structures like bones of a whale that could fold downwards like a trap.

At this point George drew me back to an original idea I had of a large metal curve in the space. I realised I needed to simplify and go back to the beginning instead of trying to force something that wasnt working.

This was when I made some progress for the white card model.
